I have over 20 years experience with lined Ponds and Koi. I specialize in proper Koi pond design and filtration. I have hundreds of hours experience with mini excavators, skid loaders, and dump trucks. My availability is very limited in the spring and summer months due to koi breeding and sales. My consultation rate is $100 an hour (within the Cedar Rapids Iowa Area), for consultations outside of that area, I will include travel time. Koi Pond Consultation in Kasson Minnesota - 2013
This pond was built by my friend Mark. We spent many hours on the phone and several in-person visits to design the bottom drains and filter system. He has bottom drain with air that feed to a settling chamber that is tucked away out of site under the deck. For winter time, he brings his koi indoors into a 500 gallon glass front tank.
Koi Pond Consultation in Viola Iowa - 2013
This is a small koi pond I consulted on in Viola Iowa. I designed the filter and bottom drain setup. The homeowner did all the construction. I installed the liner in the settling chamber and connected the pipe boots for the drains.
Koi Pond Consultation in Cedar Rapids Iowa - 2012
I did the design and rough digging for this 10,000 gallon koi pond at customers home. Another contractor built the pond.
Pond Construction in Palo Iowa - 2009
This is a 60,000 gallon koi pond constructed at the Cedar River Garden Center in Palo. It measures 44' wide x 88' long. The pond has a 6" Bottom drain which feeds a filter chamber that is hidden underneath the waterfall. The waterfall is powered by two 7600gph Dolphin pumps. Click here for construction photos.
Pond Construction in Vinton Iowa - August 2008
This pond was built by a Chiropractor!! He did most of the work himself. I installed the filter pit/pumphouse and bottom drain for him. This pond has a 4" bottom drain and sigle barrel settling chamber. Click here for construction photos.
Koi Filter Retrofit in Des Moines Iowa - August 2008
This pond, and my documentation of its construction are not finished yet, however I am including what I have so that you can see the most up-to-date information that I have. This pond was build without a drain or real filter. The pond liner got pulled up and we added a 6" bottom drain and double barrel settling chamber filter. Click here for construction photos.
Koi Filter Construction in Cedar Rapids Iowa - August 2008
This homeowner was doing alot of pond maintenance each season on his 18,000 gallon pond to remove fish waste and was struggling with green water. I worked with the owner to construct this large settling chamber and retro-fitted 2 bottom drains. The pump is a 3600gph sequence 750. Since construction of this setup, the homeowners water has cleared up and maintenance is now very easy. Click here for construction photos.

Pond Construction in Colesburg Iowa - July 2006
The homeowner had a tiny pond for many years. We tore that pond out and replaced it with something larger with a larger waterfall and a better filtration system. The pond is 6x14x4' deep and holds around 2500 gallons. The waterfall is ran from a 3600gph Sequence Cimmeron Pump. The filtration is cleaverly hidden under a little dock-style deck. It consists of a 42" square settling chamber that is connected to both a 4" drain and a 4" stande-pipe style skimmer. Click here for construction photos.
Pond Construction in Alburnett Iowa - July 2004
On this pond, I helped the homeowner design and conceptualize this 6,000gallon pond and multi-tier waterfall. My friend Shane and I did a majority of the construction on this pond. Pond Remodel in Rock Island Illinois - April 2003
On this pond, I helped the homeowner install bottom drains under the liner, and a settling chamber and filter barrel under their deck. Click here for construction photos.
Pond Construction in Cedar Rapids Iowa - 2003
This homeowner had 2 existing ponds in a serious state of disrepair. The first pond on the left was a little 150 gallon pond that needed the liner replaced and a new waterfall. The end result is pretty spectacular. The half moon pond on the right was made of bricks and cement and leaked very bad. For this pond, I lined it with rubber liner, then decorated it with rocks. I wanted to add some spitting lion head fountains, but the homeowner choose a center fountain instead.
Pond Construction in Springville Iowa - May 2001
On this pond, I helped the homeowner design and conceptualize the pond. The homeowner dug the pond himself. I installed the piping for the bottom drains, and settling chamber. I also assisted with the installation of the pond rubber, and made the boot connections through the liner to all of the plumbing. I showed the homeoner how to place the rocks. Pond Construction in Monticello Iowa - May 2000
I helped my friend Shane build a pond at his home in Monticello Iowa. The pond is heart shaped and holds about 1200 gallons. Its 10x10x3' deep. The water is circulated by a 1200gph supreme mag drive pump to a filter/waterfall in the upper left. The filter is a 55 gallon barrel with bird netting as a filter material. The barrel is connected to pond liner using my pipe boot method effectively hiding the filter. The fence was constructed around the pond because the homeowner operates a daycare. Settling Chamber Construction in Waverly Iowa - 2000
This homeowner was doing alot of pond maintenance each season on their 18,000 gallon pond to remove fish waste and was struggling with green water. I constructed this settling chamber and retro-fitted 2 bottom drain. The homeowner did the landscaping. The settling chamber is 5'x5'x4' deep, and has a drain which allows the homeowner to purge the contents of the bottom of the chamber to the grass downhill. I constructed the bridge, and hide the pumphouse underneath the far side of the bridge. The pump is a 4400gph sequence 1000. Since construction of this setup, the homeowners water has cleared up and maintenance is now very easy. Click here for construction photos.

Pond Construction in Ely Iowa
This pond is about 5000 gallons, with and a large waterfall and several connecting pools. On this pond, I helped the homeowner design and conceptualize the pond. The homeowner dug the pond himself. I installed most of the piping, including 2 bottom drains, and the drain for the settling chamber. I also assisted with the installation of the pond rubber, and made the boot connections through the liner to all of the plumbing. A 16ton crane was brought in for the placement of the rocks. I was able to direct the crane to place all of the bigger rocks. I supplied this pond with plants and koi. The water flowing over this waterfall is about 11,000gallons per hour. I installed most of the piping, including 1 bottom drain. I also installed the pond rubber, and made the boot connections through the liner to all of the plumbing. The homeowner and I placed all of the rocks and I installed the waterfall rock. I supplied this pond with plants. The water flowing over this waterfall is about 3600gallons per hour. Frank Lloyd Wright Visitors Center, Quasqueton Iowa
Myself and many members of the Eastern Iowa Pond Society got together and built this pond in a single weekend. It was a tremendous effort by all involved during a very hot summer. This visitors center is part of the complex for the Frank Lloyd Wright house in Quasqueton Iowa. It gets many visitors a year. Click here for more photos.

This is a natural pond. The homeowner and I designed a stream that zig-zagged down into the pond. The stream is lined with EPDM rubber. The pumps is a sequence 1000, 4400gph. Click here for more photos.

I helped this home-owner design this pond. The homeowner did all of the work. It is a series of small waterfall pools. The night before the pictures were taken, a heavy rain washed some clay into the pond causing the water to look muddy.

I helped this home-owner re-do his existing pond. There are 2 waterfall pools, followed by a small stream, and then the main pool. This pond has a submersible pump in a skimmer box. The homeowner is also a garden train enthusiast.

There is a Waterfall pool, followed by a small stream, and the main pool. Water leaves the main pool by another small stream followed by an arched bridge. This pond is in full shade all day. The water is circulated by a 3600gph Sequence 750.
